When Your Mobile Phone Can No Longer Make Calls

You insert your working Airtel or Jio SIM card, but the signal status bar permanently reads "No Service", "Searching...", or displays an ominous circle with a line through it. You toggle Airplane mode, reset network settings, and swap SIM cards, yet the phone refuses to connect to any cellular tower.

When a smartphone loses network connectivity across all operators, it is frequently suffering from Baseband / RF Subsystem Failure.

How to Confirm a Hardware Baseband Failure in 10 Seconds

Open your smartphone dialer app and dial:

Dial: *#06#

  • Normal Healthy Phone: An immediate pop-up window displays your device's 15-digit IMEI Number and Serial Number.
  • Hardware Baseband Failure: The dialer remains completely blank, freezes, or displays "IMEI: Null / Null".
  • On iPhones, go to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware. If the Modem Firmware field is completely blank, the baseband chip is not receiving power from the motherboard.

Causes of Network IC Failure

  1. Thermal Shock & Impact Separation: The baseband processor and Qualcomm/MediaTek RF Transceiver chips are located near the bottom edge of the motherboard. Drop impacts can shear micro-solder balls off the PCB pads.
  2. Short-Circuited Power Inductors: Power management chips (like Qualcomm PMD9655) supplying 1.2V and 1.8V to the modem IC can burn out during power surges or moisture ingress.
  3. Damaged Interposer Board on Sandwiched PCBs: Starting with the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S20, motherboards consist of two PCBs soldered together like a sandwich. Drops can crack the interposer connection joining the RF lower board to the logic upper board.

Micro-Soldering Repair at QuickFix Sadashiv Peth

Do not discard your expensive flagship smartphone. Our Level-4 engineers split the motherboard sandwich, re-pad broken baseband tracks with microscopic enamel wire, reball the BGA chips with durable silver-lead alloy, and re-fuse the boards. Your IMEI and 5G/4G connectivity are fully restored.
